In packaging, every drop of product left behind is money lost and additional waste generated. Dispensability – how easily and completely a container allows its contents to be dispensed – is therefore a critical design consideration. When product clings to a container’s sides or pools in its corners, it means extra effort, extra cleanup, and valuable product going unused. By designing packaging for maximum product evacuation, manufacturers and contract packagers can improve yields, reduce waste, and boost their bottom line.
The Problem with Traditional Containers
Many traditional containers – from rigid pails and drums to pillow style IBC and bag-in-box – are not designed for easy emptying. Rigid containers often trap viscous liquids in corners and crevices, forcing users to tilt or scrape out the remnants. The familiar glug-glug of a pouring jug is a sign of interrupted flow that leaves residual product behind. Likewise, pillow-style bag-in-box and IBC liners collapse unevenly as they empty, forming folds where liquid pools. Users may end up shaking or squeezing these liners to get the last bit out, or disposing of them with usable product still inside. In short, conventional container shapes can result in surprising amounts of leftover product and wasted resources.
Cheertainer®: A Smarter Shape for Better Flow
CDF’s Cheertainer® bag-in-box is a prime example of designing for dispensability. Unlike a pillow liner, the Cheertainer is a gusseted form-fit bag that forms the rectangular shape of its box. This form eliminates the folds and pockets that trap liquid in a flat bag. As a result, product flows out smoothly as the Cheertainer collapses uniformly inward, without the air surges or “glugging” you get with rigid jugs. Trials have shown that Cheertainer liners leave significantly less residue behind than standard pillow liners – meaning more usable product from each container. As an added bonus, the Cheertainer achieves this improved evacuation while using up to 50% less plastic than some semi-rigid packaging, supporting sustainability alongside efficiency.
IBC Form-Fit™ Liners: Bulk Packaging without the Waste
For larger bulk containers like IBC totes, CDF’s Form-Fit™ liner applies the same principle on a bigger scale. Instead of a pillow liner that can create folds inside the tote, a Form-Fit liner is made to match the tote’s cube shape and forms in the corners. This means no big folds or wrinkles for product to get stuck in – even thick fluids that would normally cling to a liner can flow out more easily. In fact, with the Air-Assist® feature for viscous products (an inflatable insert that gently presses the liner as product is dispensed), Form-Fit liners can evacuate up to 99.5% of a tote’s contents. Virtually nothing is left behind except a nearly empty liner. An added benefit: using these liners keeps the IBC itself clean, eliminating most of the time and labor needed to wash out residue from the tote.
More Product, Less Waste: Business Benefits
Investing in packaging that’s optimized for dispensability yields benefits across operations:
- Reduced Product Loss: Near-total evacuation means less valuable product is thrown away. Saving that extra 1–2% in every container can add up to significant cost savings over time.
- Cleaner Disposal: When containers empty out cleanly, there’s less mess and easier disposal. Minimal residue in liners simplifies handling and waste processing, and in bulk systems it eliminates the need to rinse or wash out containers.
- Better Yield and Efficiency: Higher evacuation rates improve production yield since more of each batch makes it into use. It also means workers spend less time fussing with containers to extract the last drops, keeping operations running smoothly.
